Economic and social impact of family farms – and their loss – The Inspired Economist

bangingpatchouli:

Yesterday, I saw a story of how local dairy farmers are going out of business because the Dean Dairy in Louisville closed. Farmers no longer have anywhere to get their milk processed. Why? They’ve been driven out of business by WalMart, which has its own processing facilities.

Family farms are on their way to becoming extinct. Some may not think that’s a big deal, but farming is an intrinsic part of local economies everywhere. WalMart has damaged local economies, especially in small towns, throughout the U.S.

As much as possible, shop locally – farmers markets, independent grocery stores or chains that source locally. Eat at locally owned and sourced restaurants.
