I don’t think you can underestimate the impact Mary Tyler Moore had on women of my generation.
I’m sure if I look back on her show from the perspective of 2017, I’d see all the ways that misogyny shaped her character. But back then in the 70′s, I got to see the first truly sympathetic career woman in her. She was funny. She was passionate. She was respected, and even when she had no one in her corner, she didn’t back down. She hurt, but she never gave up. I never really gave her much thought, but I could never forget her. Some little part of her lodged in my psyche and made it possible for me to believe that I could be who I am today.
