i hate this. im going to think about this everytime i do this now. its like that fucking white people running across the road post im so pissed.

in my experience, both from asking my friends and being white myself, it’s because there seems to be some unspoken rule that all white children be raised thinking YOU HAVE TO SMILE WHEN YOU GET SOMEONE and at some point we all allow that to degenerate to “this looks kinda like a smile and I am acknowledging you therefore my job is done”

Yeah, it’s basically an acknowledgement of “hey, you’re there, I see you’re there, I’m aware that you’re there, and I’ve acknowledged you”, but it’s hard to smile on command when you really just want to get on with what you’re doing. I know it probably doesn’t seem like it, but it’s meant to be a courtesy, and we do it to each other, too.

the first time this was pointed out to me, a friend of mine posted a selfie with their family doing the ‘white people smile’. i was like,,, ok…??? and i scrolled down to something funny and i smiled, and i realised…
