My dad asked me how many people I think have read the whole book, as I did. I told him it’s probably more than he thinks, given all the literary scholars on the one hand and nerds (like me) on the other. Once, when I was 13 and the 1978 movie version of Les Miserables came to TV over the Xmas break. Anthony Perkins made a great Javert. But, after reading the book version, I couldn’t decide who was more miserable, me or Victor Hugo.
